In Russian, a mortar is a minomet and fires, accordingly, miny. This should not be translated as mines. In English, a mortar fires not mines or shells but mortar bombs.

Russian motor-rifle battalions have mortar batteries attached. Mortars traditionally look like this, and in the Russian media context are usually of 82mm or 120mm calibre:

although when they are mounted in vehicles, such as the Russian Nona, Vena or Tyulpan, they are far less distinctive.

A standard mortar bomb is easily distinguished from other munitions:

As always, if in doubt what to call what is being fired by anything, no translator can go very far wrong by calling it a round of ammunition or just a round.
