Russian Air Defence Types

What are Igla, Triumf, etc. etc.?

The table below lists the most commonly-encountered artillery pieces, including towed artillery, self-propelled (samokhodnaya) artillery (self-propelled guns or SPGs) and multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) such as Grad.

Please note this is not an exhaustive list of artillery types: the weapons listed below are only those which commonly feature in the Russian media, and the list is therefore also greatly simplified. Please use the feedback page if there are any omissions you feel should be made good.

Name Model No Type NATO designation
Игла 9K38 Man-portable anti-aircraft missile (PZRK) SA-18

S-300 Heavy vehicle-based anti-air and anti-missile missile: many different variants SA-10/SA-12
Триумф S-400 / S-300PMU-3 Most recently reported derivative of S-300 SA-20
Тунгуска / Панцирь 2K22 / 2S6 Integrated air defence system: guns and missiles on an armoured vehicle SA-19
Buk-M1 9K38 Missile system on armoured vehicle SA-17

Be aware: there is room for confusion between Cyrillic and Latin letters in designations of this kind, so you will sometimes see (for example) C-300 given in English meaning S-300, or X-55 meaning Kh-55.
